The Inspires Service at HMP Swinfen Hall is part of the Offender Personality Disorder Pathway (OPD), a network of services across health and justice designed to reduce serious reoffending and improve psychological wellbeing. The Inspires service is delivered in partnership by Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation Trust (NHFT) and HMP Swinfen Hall and includes both a treatment service and a Psychologically Informed Planned Environment (PIPE). The Residential Treatment service is located on D wing and provides a range of therapeutic interventions to 30 service users residing on the wing. The service works with young adults on a long-term basis for 2 years and aims to reduce risk of serious reoffending and improve psychological wellbeing.
As well as carrying out residential duties, Officers on D wing work alongside the clinical team. The PIPE unit offers young adults the chance to live and develop through being part of a pro-social community that aims to replicate ordinary life more closely. The PIPE is not a programme or therapy but supports young adults whilst they are completing interventions off the unit or helps them to consolidate skills they have learnt through completing a programme or psychological therapy.
Both the treatment service and the PIPE are underpinned by a relational model meaning that the focus is on building relationships between staff and young adults as well as between the young adults themselves. These relationships are seen as critical in enabling young adults to begin to make changes. There are also structured sessions delivered on the wings that aim to teach skills and develop competencies such as emotion regulation, problem solving and managing conflict.
Officers working within the Inspires Treatment Service and PIPE (D and E wing) will undertake the following in addition to their residential role:
- Attend monthly individual supervision with a clinical member of the team
- Attend team reflective practice groups
- Attend multi-disciplinary meetings with clinical staff
- Hold a case load of service users as keyworker and complete OPD keywork sessions
- Plan and deliver officer led group sessions which can include a variety of activities such as debate groups, cooking, gardening, street racket, Xbox, art and crafts, music.
- Attend specialist training
- Co-facilitate therapy sessions with clinical staff
- Deliver PIPE structured groups
- Planning and facilitating community events
Officers working within the Inspires Service will be provided with training and regular supervision.
