Instructor Mentor – Furniture Repair Workshop
The Instructor Mentor supports and guides prisoners in the Furniture Repair workshop at HMPLeicester.
The role is non‑operational but involves direct supervision, training, and management of a group of prisoners to ensure a structured, disciplined working environment that mirrors external employment experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in the selection process of prisoners for the workshop.
- Induct prisoners into the workshop area and provide training on health and safety, COSHH, machinery and tools usage.
- Ensure all tools, equipment and raw materials are safe, secure and accurately accounted for.
- Provide support and tailor learning and training requirements to individual prisoner needs.
- Set work schedules, manage targets and quality standards, and maintain contractual delivery.
- Supervise, manage and control prisoners safely, ensuring performance, motivation, discipline, appraisal and development.
- Conduct metal detector scans or rub‑down searches of prisoners attending or leaving workshops.
- Initiate product development reviews, maintain output levels and create variety of work experiences.
- Contribute to risk and health‑and‑safety assessments for consumables and the workshop area.
- Assist in prisoner reports, parole and sentence planning, assessment, care in custody & teamwork (ACCT) and security information reports (SIRs).
- Open and complete ACCT forms, Violence Reduction Incident Reports (VRIR) and SIRs when required, and contribute to Incentive Earned Privileges (IEP) reports.
- Maintain regular radio‑net communications in line with the Local Security Strategy.
- Request materials, estimate usage and manage procurement to meet work targets while ensuring quality assurance.
- Log attendance and approve prisoner hours worked, wages and record piecework where appropriate.
- Attend and contribute to relevant meetings, providing administrative support for workshop activities.
- Prepare documentation for managers, support verification and quality checking.
