Qualification & Eligibility:
- At least 18 years old at commencement of employment
- Meet the Civil Service nationalities requirements
- Pass a medical and fitness assessment
- Meet the required eyesight standard in both eyes
- Meet a suitable standard of hearing (without hearing aids)
- Tattoos are permitted, including visible ones, but must not be offensive, discriminatory, violent, or intimidating; facial tattoos generally not acceptable except for cultural, religious, or medical reasons
- To work in a high-security prison (category A) you must have been a resident in the UK for the last 3 years
Assessment Process:
- Complete initial application form.
- Stage 1 online tests (basic judgement and numerical skills).
- If successful, Stage 2 online test (values-based assessment).
- Online Assessment Centre (OAC).
- If successful at OAC and allocated to a vacancy, complete a medical and fitness test (eyesight, hearing, health screening).
Salary and Working Hours:
- Initial training: 37 hours per week.
- After training, you may choose to work 37, 39 or 41 hours per week. Salary reflects weekly hours.
- 37 hours a week = £33,746 per year
- 39 hours a week = £35,875 per year
- 41 hours a week = £38,003 per year
All salary figures quoted include any additional allowances. The standard working week is based on a 39 hour shift pattern.

Merit List: This is a merit vacancy. Successful applicants at the online assessment centre are added to a merit list based on their score. The prison makes job offers to those with the highest scores first when positions become available. Individuals remain on the merit list for 12 months and must reapply thereafter.
Operational Support Grade (OSG): After the OAC, if you are unsuccessful in your application to become a prison officer, you may be offered an alternative role as an OSG.
