Probation Services Officer (PSO) role within the Probation Service, operating in the Herefordshire, Shropshire, and Telford areas. The role focuses on helping medium and lower‑risk offenders adjust to life after sentence and works to keep the public safe.
Responsibilities
- Assess and manage offenders before and after sentence.
- Implement sentences and produce detailed reports.
- Provide case management support using service procedures and practice directions.
- Coordinate with courts and agencies across the justice system.
- Support offenders with practical advice on housing, employment and other needs.
Qualifications and Experience
- No degree required; personal qualities are paramount.
- Empathetic, patient, resilient and organised.
- Experience working with people who have social or personal difficulties is desirable.
- Good written communication skills – ability to produce clear, accurate reports by tight deadlines.
- Right to work in the United Kingdom.
Working Pattern
Regular hours: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday. The role may require working until 7:00 pm on one night each week.
Salary
Starting salary of £28,064, with annual pay progression through the Competency Based Framework and band adjustments aligned with Civil Service pay guidance.

Location
The PSO may be based at a variety of office, court, team or prison locations within the region, with the preference for a base within a 60‑minute commute of the applicant’s home.
