Portsmouth Magistrates Court operates within HMCTS' South West Regional Operation. The Operations Manager supports the smooth running of the court, leading a team and working with the court team to meet operational and customer‑focused objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the court operation team, ensuring successful delivery of performance objectives.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with the judiciary, supporting agencies, voluntary groups and other stakeholders.
  • Monitor and improve operational efficiency, identifying service improvement opportunities with external agencies.
  • Manage complaints and corrective actions within set timeframes, ensuring compliance with Health and Safety, IT and workstation standards.
  • Provide regular updates to the Operations Manager on service levels, workforce issues and resource requirements.

Key Requirements

  • Office‑based role with 37 hours per week (part‑time, flexible or job‑sharing arrangements based on business needs and agreement prior to appointment, with a minimum of three full days per week).
  • Experience leading teams in a process‑ and compliance‑driven environment.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills.
  • Ability to resolve complaints and implement corrective actions efficiently.
  • Knowledge of court operation standards and relevant supporting agencies.
  • Eligible to work in the United Kingdom and meet UK Immigration Rules; not eligible for new Skilled Worker visa sponsorship unless previously held before 22 July 2025.

Working Arrangements

The role offers hybrid working arrangements where business needs allow. All employees are required to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in an office. Hybrid working is not suitable for all roles and may be subject to regular review. For nationally advertised positions, appointment will be made to the office nearest to the employee’s postcode. The base location may change for current MoJ employees to the nearest viable office within the National Office Network.

Visas & Eligibility

This role is not eligible for new Skilled Worker visas in accordance with current immigration rules. If you previously held a Skilled Worker visa before 22 July 2025, inform the hiring team during vetting. Those without such a visa must consider alternative means of obtaining UK work rights.
