Overview of the Job

The job holder will work as part of a team providing 24‑hour cover at an Approved Premises (AP), including security and monitoring services. The role involves supporting the offender while resident at the AP, contributing to risk management and sentence plan objectives, and reporting any significant changes related to risk or non‑compliance with enforcement procedures. The goal is to ensure that offenders and the premises remain safe and secure throughout the shift.

Summary

The post requires the holder to assist in the well‑being and supervision of residents, maintain discipline, adhere to AP rules, licence conditions, and sentence plan objectives specific to residency. The role involves substantial out‑of‑hours work, including night duty and weekends, and may require covering duties at other APs during staff absences. The holder must demonstrate a commitment to equality and inclusion and handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.

Responsibilities, Activities & Duties

  • Contribute to effective team practice, communicate and collaborate with colleagues to ensure consistent work practices and a positive working environment.
  • Effectively communicate key risk issues at handover and throughout the shift, including communication with Offender Managers, Stand‑by Manager and partner agencies such as Police, Health professionals and drug/alcohol services.
  • Undertake regular inspections of the building, including cellars and grounds, record any occurrences, damage or defects and monitor CCTV equipment.
  • Maintain an active presence in the AP, engage with residents in a pro‑social manner and support their protection through observation of risk management plans and general well‑being.
  • Actively engage with and monitor high‑risk residents, motivate compliance and manage abusive or aggressive behaviour appropriately.
  • Contribute to risk management plans by observing and reporting any significant changes in risk or re‑offending and alerting non‑compliance within agreed enforcement procedures.
  • Support the sentence plan objectives by engaging residents in purposeful activities as agreed with the AP Manager and Offender Manager.
  • Ensure the AP is locked and secure during curfew, and confirm the presence and well‑being of all residents overnight.
  • Facilitate the AP as a first or emergency point of contact out of hours.
  • Provide accurate analysis of situations and risk assessments to the Offender Manager or Out‑of‑Hours Manager, which may lead to enforcement and/or compliance with court orders, licences, and AP rules.
  • Create a safe working environment for staff, residents and visitors by adhering to Health and Safety legislation, Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and risk assessments, reporting incidents to the Manager.
  • Execute Health and Safety, fire alarm, curfews, and room curfew checks in line with procedures.
  • Initiate or conduct room searches based on concerns around risk.
  • Pack up residents’ possessions as directed.
  • Set up and deliver purposeful activities linked to residents’ sentence plan objectives as agreed with the Offender Manager and AP Manager.
  • Supervise residents’ meals.
  • Conduct inductions for new residents.
  • Follow prescribed medication procedures, issue medication, and audit medication sheets weekly and nightly.
  • Carry out drug and alcohol tests in line with the risk management plan when necessary.
  • Administer First Aid if a resident is injured or self‑harm.
  • Maintain AP records and files, including data entry and completion of incident reports.
  • Carry out safeguarding children duties in accordance with statutory responsibilities and agency policies.
  • Deal with visitors, telephone calls, and monitor visiting contractors in accordance with health and safety.
  • Model pro‑social behaviour, reinforce positive attitudes, and challenge anti‑social behaviour.
  • Operate within the aims and values of the Probation Service and Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS).

Technical Requirements

Minimum 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above (including English and Maths), or equivalent qualification, or relevant work experience with the ability to evidence high‑level numeracy and literacy skills required to read, understand and interpret policies, and to write reports and correspondence for internal and external stakeholders. IT Skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.

Hours of Work (Unsocial Hours) Allowances Additional payments are made for working unsocial hours.
