Location: HMP Full Sutton, Moor Ln, Full Sutton, York YO41 1PS

Starting salary: £35,875 (for a 39 hour week inc 20% unsocial)

Skilled Worker visa sponsorship may be available for this role, subject to eligibility and in accordance with the UK Immigration Rules in force at the time of application. Due to the security status of this prison a Counter‑Terrorism Check (CTC vetting) will need to be undertaken. Proof of UK residence for the last 3 years is required.

Responsibilities

  • Prison officers protect the public and help make an impact on prisoners' lives, acting as peacekeepers, counsellors, and teachers.
  • They build constructive, positive and professional relationships with prisoners, support colleagues, maintain safety, and work various shifts including weekends.
  • Roles vary daily: moments as a peacekeeper, continuing as a counsellor or teacher, working directly with prisoners to protect the public and make a positive impact.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years old at the point you commence employment.
  • Meet Civil Service Nationality requirements and be able to prove residency in the UK for the last 3 years (for CTC vetting).
  • Pass medical and fitness assessment, including eyesight and hearing tests.
  • Meet eyesight standards in both eyes with and without corrective lenses.
  • Be able to provide suitable standard of hearing (without hearing aids).
  • Tattoos permitted only if not offensive, discriminatory, violent, intimidating; facial tattoos generally not acceptable except cultural, religious or medical reasons.
  • Feel you have integrity, skills, strength of character, self‑confidence, great communication skills and resilience.

Employment Details

The initial training is 37 hours a week. After training you can choose to work 37, 39 or 41 hours a week. Your annual salary will reflect your weekly hours:

  • 37 hours a week = £33,746 a year
  • 39 hours a week = £35,875 a year
  • 41 hours a week = £38,003 a year

Prisons operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, covering evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays (which are added to your holiday allowance). Most prisons work with a changing shift pattern of 39 hours a week. Additional paid hours may be available.

Assessment Process

During the recruitment process you will be assessed on behaviours, strengths and abilities needed to become an effective prison officer. These include communication and influencing, numerical, written and spoken English. The assessment includes online tests (stage 1 and 2) and an online assessment centre. Successful candidates will receive a pass vacancy offer immediately if a position is available, otherwise will be placed on a reserve list.

Security Checks

Level of security checks required: Counter‑Terrorism Check (CTC). Proof of UK residency for last 3 years required. Standard pre‑employment checks include Enhanced Level 2 vetting.
