The National Distribution Centre (NDC) is part of the Ministry of Justice Transport Unit, which consists of three core business areas within the Commercial directorate. Fleet Engineering Services (FES) provides services to HM Prisons & Probation Services and undertakes a wide range of engineering activities, including:
- First line servicing for the NDC fleet of heavy and light commercial vehicles.
- Second line repairs, bodywork, and vehicle modifications.
- Design, development, and conversion work for HMPPS tactical units.
- Inspection and preparation of vehicles for re-issue or disposal.
The in-house NDC fleet comprises 22 rigid/drawbar vehicles providing a scheduled service of 500 visits per month. The fleet operates on a specialised demount system, addressing physical access restrictions in prisons. The workshop also supports the wider MOJ fleet.
Role Summary:
This is a full-time onsite role, not available as hybrid or remote working. The contracted hours are:
- Monday to Thursday: 0800hrs to 1600hrs
- Friday: 0800hrs to 1530hrs
Occasionally, weekend work and overtime may be required depending on workload demands in Fleet Engineering.
We are seeking a reliable and motivated Fleet Engineer to join our team. This role is suited to someone who thrives in a fast-paced, practical working environment. Responsibilities include:
- Repair, maintenance, and servicing of the Ministry of Justice fleet.
- Ensuring vehicles are legally compliant before issue to users and after repairs or conversions.
- Administrative duties related to the area.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work effectively as part of a team and manage competing demands.
- Maintain accurate records and work with limited supervision.
- Provide vehicle service functions, including component replacement and maintenance.
- Assist fitters in workshops as needed.
- Check in new vehicles and prepare them for issue.
- Organise collections of vehicles and parts.
- Ensure vehicles going to auction are roadworthy.
- Prepare vehicle record books for new allocations.
- Carry out vehicle cleaning as required.
- Build and maintain relationships with internal departments and external stakeholders.
- Keep records and trackers updated.
Health, Safety and Welfare:
- Report hazards and engage with the Health, Safety and Training manager.
- Support the Workshop Manager in creating a safe working environment by adhering to Health and Safety legislation.
Additional Requirements:
- Full clean driving licence.
- Excellent team-working skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Great organisational and record-keeping skills.
- Basic/intermediate IT skills – Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- NVQ Level 2 Vehicle Maintenance or equivalent.
- Hold valid fork-lift and scissor lift licences (training can be provided).

Additional Information:
The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. Standard full-time working hours are 37 hours per week excluding breaks.
