About the role
The Community Payback Supervisor role is accommodated to people on probation who work or have caring responsibilities. This operational role involves supervising work groups of offenders serving a community sentence and may include driving service vehicles to transport people or equipment. You will expect to work frequent weekends, and occasionally cover evenings; weekend work is paid at a higher rate. The pace of the work means regular rest breaks are not always possible, but the Service ensures that your wellbeing is looked after.
Responsibilities
- Directly supervise and manage small teams of offenders at community payback sites.
- Ensure all work site supervision tasks are completed and the tasks are carried out to the best of the offenders’ ability.
- Demonstrate good practice to service users and encourage compliance with expectations.
- Oversee a variety of manual community improvement tasks – e.g. building benches, clearing overgrowth, restoring community facilities, planting trees, litter picking, graffiti removal.
- Drive service vehicles where required to transport people or equipment.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Full UK Manual Driving Licence – candidates with only an automatic licence will not be considered.
- Experience supervising or leading small teams is desirable.
- Good communication, empathy and a commitment to supporting offenders.
Working conditions & benefits
- Standard full‑time hours of 37 per week (excluding unpaid breaks).
- Part‑time, flexible or job‑sharing arrangements may be considered.
- Annual leave: 25 days on appointment, increasing to 30 days after five years’ service plus public holidays.
- Pension: covered by the Local Government Pension Scheme.
- Training: extensive training and development opportunities are provided through the Ministry of Justice.
- Hybrid working arrangements may be available where business needs allow.
- Competitive starting salary of £26,475, with progression through the Competency Based Framework.
