This non‑operational instructional job is based in an establishment. The holder will supervise, provide knowledge and skills to prisoners in a specialist workshop, helping them improve employment prospects upon release and reduce reoffending. Services must be delivered to a high standard with security and control maintained at all times. The role involves teaching prisoners toward national qualifications and may be supported by external organisations.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Participate in selection of prisoners for the workshop/area of work.
  • Induct prisoners and train them in health and safety, COSHH, machinery and tools usage.
  • Provide support, tailoring learning to individual needs.
  • Set work schedules, manage targets and quality standards, maintaining contractual delivery.
  • Assess and evaluate prisoners’ skills against national qualification standards.
  • Supervise and maintain discipline, responsible for performance, motivation, appraisal and development.
  • Maintain regular communications via radio net as per Local Security Strategy.
  • Open and complete ACCT, VRIR, and SIR forms and contribute to IEP reports.
  • Perform pat‑down searches as required.
  • Ensure quality assurance against product specifications.
  • Log attendance, approve hours worked and wages, including piece‑work recording.
  • Check workshop machinery, maintain equipment security and carry out maintenance programme.
  • Contribute to prisoner reports including parole and sentence planning.
  • Monitor regime information and update training records.
  • Contribute to health‑and‑safety risk assessments.
  • Request materials and estimate usage to meet targets.
  • Initiate product development reviews to maintain output and variety.
  • Participate in self‑audit and service delivery indicator achievements.
  • Complete administrative activities to support smooth running.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant work experience in a specialist field.
  • Some supervisory experience preferred.
  • Experience of using industrial standard machinery and equipment.
  • Level 3 qualification in specialism or equivalent experience, or willingness to work towards it.
  • IT skills.
  • Basic maths.
  • Basic English (English or Welsh where specified).
