The National Distribution Centre (NDC) provides services to HM Prisons & Probation Services and undertakes a wide range of engineering activities. The role involves:
- Provision of first line servicing for the NDC fleet of heavy and light commercial vehicles, as well as second line repairs, bodywork and vehicle modifications.
- Design, develop and carry out conversion work on behalf of HMPPS tactical units as per their specifications.
- Inspection of vehicles returned to Branston to establish if they can be reissued to a unit.
- Support to the wider MOJ fleet.
The workshop operates a single shift system, supported by ‘nights out’ as required. The NDC is responsible for the collection, storage and delivery of various goods and materials.
Role Summary:
This is a full-time onsite role. The contracted hours will be:
- Monday to Thursday: 0800hrs to 1600hrs
- Friday: 0800hrs to 1530hrs
Occasional weekend work and overtime may be required depending on workload demands.
Key Responsibilities:
- Carry out repair, maintenance and servicing of the Ministry of Justice fleet.
- Ensure vehicles are legally compliant before issue to users and following any repair or conversion work.
- Maintain accurate records and engage in administrative duties.
General Tasks:
- Provide a vehicle service function including the replacement of failed components.
- Assist fitters in workshops as required.
- Check in all new vehicles delivered and prepare them for issue.
- Organise collections of vehicles and parts as needed.
- Ensure all vehicles going to auction are roadworthy.
- Build and maintain relationships with internal departments and external stakeholders.
- Keep records and relevant trackers updated.
Health, Safety and Welfare:
- Report hazards and engage with Health, Safety and Training manager.
- Support the Workshop Manager in creating a safe working environment.
Essential Criteria:
- Full clean driving licence
- Excellent team-working skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Great organisational and record-keeping skills
- Basic/intermediate IT skills – Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
- NVQ Level 2 Vehicle Maintenance or equivalent
- Hold a valid fork-lift and scissor lift licences (training can be provided)

Additional Information:
The MoJ offers Hybrid Working arrangements where business need allows. Standard full-time working hours are 37 hours per week excluding breaks. HMPPS welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns.
