The National Distribution Centre (NDC) is responsible for the collection, storage and delivery of internally manufactured goods, raw materials, prisoner property, mattresses, footwear and a small amount of document storage for HMPPS. The site is also used to support other MoJ activities as and when required.
The workshop provides support to the wider MOJ fleet. Fleet Engineering Services (FES) provides services to HM Prisons & Probation Services and undertakes a wide range of engineering activities including:
- First line servicing for the NDC fleet of heavy and light commercial vehicles
- Second line repairs, bodywork and vehicle modifications
- Design, develop and carry out conversion work on behalf of HMPPS tactical units
- Inspection of vehicles returned to Branston to establish if they can be reissued
Role Summary:
This is a full-time, on-site role and is not available as hybrid or remote working. The contracted hours will be:
- Monday to Thursday: 0800hrs to 1600hrs
- Friday: 0800hrs to 1530hrs
On occasions, you might be required to work weekends and some days overtime depending on the workload demands in Fleet Engineering.
We are seeking a reliable and motivated Fleet Engineer to join our team. This role is well suited to someone who thrives in a fast-paced, practical working environment. The role involves carrying out the repair, maintenance and servicing of the Ministry of Justice fleet, ensuring best practice is applied at all times. The post holder will also ensure vehicles are legally compliant before issue to users, on return to the facility, and following any repair or conversion work. This will also include administrative duties for the area.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide a vehicle service function including the replacement of failed components
- Carry out service/maintenance/defect on all the Demounts throughout the calendar year
- Assist the fitters in workshops as required
- Check in all new vehicles delivered and prep to issue standard
Health, Safety and Welfare:
Report hazards and fully engage with Health, Safety and Training manager. Support the Workshop Manager in creating a safe working environment for staff, visitors, and contractors by adhering to Health and Safety legislation, ensuring Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) and Risk Assessments (RA) are followed, and by reporting any incidents to the Workshop Manager.
General Requirements:
- Full clean driving licence
- Excellent team-working skills
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Great organisational and record-keeping skills
- Ability to work effectively under limited supervision
- Basic/intermediate IT skills – Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
- NVQ Level 2 Vehicle Maintenance or equivalent
- Hold a valid fork-lift and scissor lift licences – training can be provided if required
