About the role
A Probation Services Officer (PSO) will carry out the full range of duties with people on probation before and after sentence, including assessment, sentence implementation, offender management and producing reports. The PSO provides case‑management support from the point of entry to the point of completion, working with service procedures and professional judgement. They will work with medium and lower‑risk people on probation, assessing risk, providing information to courts, liaising with agencies and delivering practical support to offenders, such as housing and employment advice.
Responsibilities
- Assess and support people on probation before and after sentence
- Implement sentencing decisions and manage offender risk
- Produce clear, accurate reports to tight deadlines
- Provide case‑management support, utilising service procedures and practice directions
- Work closely with courts, agencies and the wider justice system to provide information and advice
- Support offenders with practical advice on housing, employment, health, and other needs
Requirements & qualifications
- Right to work in the United Kingdom (no degree required)
- Previous experience working with people who have social or personal difficulties
- Empathy, patience and resilience in challenging circumstances
- Excellent written communication skills to produce clear and accurate reports
- Strong verbal communication skills, able to listen and communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders
- Demonstrated ability to assess risk and make justice‑system decisions in line with Civil Service behaviours
- Evidence of delivering at pace, managing quality services, and influencing outcomes (Civil Service Success Profile Criteria)
