Overview
When you join us as a trainee legal adviser, you will discover this is not a typical 9‑to‑5 role. Over a two‑year training period you will be supported and mentored while learning new skills every day in a fast‑moving, fluid environment. After training you will have the opportunity to progress to an SEO Tier 1 Legal Adviser, a fully qualified position within HMCTS.
Responsibilities
- Provide impartial and objective legal advice to magistrates on points of law, practice and procedure.
- Assist in the conduct of case‑management hearings and liaise with outside agencies involved in specialist court work.
- Help keep the courts running smoothly and efficiently, handling matters ranging from minor motoring offences to serious crimes.
- Act as the professional face of the court, working with integrity, empathy and respect at all times.
- Adapt quickly to a dynamic environment, learning new legal skills and responding to change.
Qualifications and Experience
- Passed the academic stage of qualification to become a solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales, or be a Fellow or graduate member of the Chartered Institute of Legal Executives.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, capable of inspiring confidence and speaking in court.
- Strong problem‑solving ability and decision‑making skills; able to think on your feet in a busy court setting.
- Committed to maintaining and increasing knowledge of the law.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure, with a diplomatic and tactful approach to everyone.
