The Probation Service Officer (PSO) is responsible for the full management of individuals on probation before and after sentence. Roles include assessing risks, implementing sentences, managing offender progress, producing accurate reports and providing case‑management support in line with service procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Assess and manage risks associated with offenders on probation.
  • Develop and implement individualized case plans.
  • Provide accurate, timely reports to courts and other agencies.
  • Support offenders with practical matters such as housing, employment and personal development.
  • Maintain professional judgment within the framework of service procedures and best practice.
  • Monitor compliance with sentence requirements and report deviations.
  • Collaborate closely with courts, police, social services and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Empathetic, patient, resilient and organised personal qualities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to produce clear, accurate reports to tight deadlines.
  • Experience working with individuals who have social or personal difficulties is desirable.
  • No degree required; however, a willingness to learn and develop is essential.
  • Right to work in the UK.
