Job role: Regional Safety and Security Officer (RSSO) – Grade HEOSalary: National salary £35,335 – £37,847; London salary £40,014 – £42,859 (dependent on base location).

About the Role

The RSSO sits within the National Support Unit (NSU), reporting to the Safety and Security Lead. The role involves advising and supporting Incident and Safety Leads and Delivery Directors on Security, Health and Safety and Fire Safety matters to ensure compliance with HMCTS operational and legislative requirements. The position requires real‑time advice, support and guidance to Senior Operational Managers and their staff across multiple sites in the South East, with occasional travel to other locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise and support Delivery Directors and Senior Operational Managers on Health and Safety, security and fire safety matters, identifying risks and ensuring compliance.
  • Lead incident and accident investigations of significant events, producing lessons learned and mitigating future incidents.
  • Conduct Fire Risk Assessments and audit compliance with operational and legislative requirements.
  • Perform Health and Safety and Security inspections and audits.
  • Assist Senior Operational Managers on security and safety risk assessments and share best practice across the region.
  • Act as the first specialist point of contact on security and safety matters for managers, staff, judicial office holders and justice partners.
  • Deliver and facilitate training on security and safety matters, including Fire and Incident Control Training.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience or basic knowledge of Health and Safety, Fire Safety or Security policies, strategies and systems.
  • Proven ability to conduct thorough investigations and audits with strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to work through ambiguity to plan ahead and proactively solve problems.
  • Experience in operational delivery, managing safety and security incidents at local and regional levels.
  • Interpersonal, consultative and negotiating skills, including the ability to persuade and influence senior stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to convey complex information clearly to diverse audiences.

Required Training and Credentials

  • Specialist Health and Safety qualification: minimum NEBOSH General Certificate; membership of relevant professional institutes (Institute of Occupational Safety and Health, Security Institute, Institution of Fire Engineers, IFSM).
  • Knowledge of British Standards BS 9999/BS 9997 and the Fire Safety Order 2005.
  • Accreditation in PAS79 Fire Risk Assessor training.
  • Completion of National Protective Security Authority (NPSA) protective security training.

Security Clearance

The successful candidate must obtain and maintain Security Check (SC) Clearance.
