Band 3 PSOs work either Part Time or Full Time. Our immediate vacancy is 1 x PT (0.5FTE) at Albion Street Approved Premises (AP). The role involves providing critical community-based services to accommodate and closely supervise high-risk offenders on release from prison, for public protection. AP are staffed 24 hours per day, with staff enforcing overnight curfews and other monitoring and reporting requirements.

Probation Services Officers (PSOs) lead key interventions and rehabilitative activities with residents, working regular hours Monday to Friday, with weekend coverage as required. Providing suitable accommodation on release is vital for reducing reoffending and supporting community reintegration. Merit List may be used to fill other vacancies across North East Region AP sites.

Approved Premises are residential units primarily for individuals released on licence requiring high supervision to manage risks to public safety. The AP supports offenders\’ transition from custody into the community. PSOs will carry out keywork with residents and engage them in purposeful activities to aid their rehabilitation.

The job involves working with individuals on probation before and after sentencing, including assessment, sentence implementation, offender management, and report writing. The role supports case management for a diverse caseload, following service procedures and professional judgment.

Summary

The main objectives are to assess and manage risks posed by probation clients to protect victims and the public by:

  • liaising with courts, criminal justice, and partner agencies;
  • supervising and managing risks for those on community sentences and post-custody;
  • collaborating with other agencies to prevent crime and support victims and offenders.

All activities must reflect a commitment to equality, inclusion, and confidentiality. Out-of-hours work may be required, including court and AP duties, evening reporting, etc.

Responsibilities, Activities & Duties

  • Manage offenders assessed as low or medium risk, supporting high-risk cases alongside Probation Officers.
  • Contribute to risk management plans, reporting significant changes or non-compliance.
  • Use computer systems to maintain records accurately.
  • Ensure effective referral and communication with relevant agencies and service providers.
  • Conduct visits to prisons, homes, or other locations as needed.
  • Complete reports for court and prosecute breaches.
  • Provide team cover as required.
  • Deliver and co-lead accredited programmes.
  • Conduct mandatory alcohol/drug tests and follow medication procedures.
  • Perform safeguarding duties in accordance with statutory responsibilities and policies.
  • Model pro-social behavior and challenge anti-social attitudes.
  • Work in alignment with PS and HMPPS values.
