Starting salary: £35,875 for a 39 hour week incl. 20% unsocial.

Responsibilities

Prison officers protect the public and make an impact on prisoners’ lives. Duties include peace‑keeping, counselling, teaching and other roles. Officers work shifts—often evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays—under a 39‑hour week changing shift pattern. They build constructive relationships with prisoners and work as a team to maintain safety.

Eligibility & Qualifications

  • At least 18 years old at commencement of employment.
  • Meet Civil Service nationality requirements.
  • Pass a medical and fitness assessment, including eyesight and hearing tests.
  • Residency: proof of UK residence for the last three years for CTC vetting.
  • Tattoos must not be offensive; facial tattoos generally not acceptable.
  • Counter‑Terrorism Check (CTC) required; residency requirement must be met.

Salary

Pay is based on weekly hours:

  • 37 hours – £33,746 per year
  • 39 hours – £35,875 per year

  • Civil Service pension – employer contribution 28.97%.

Assessment Process

The process includes online tests for judgement and numerical skills, a values‑based assessment, and an online assessment centre where behaviours and strengths are evaluated.
