Our Crown Court Clerks are essential to ensure Crown Court hearings run smoothly. They speak confidently in court, communicate with the Judge and all participants, and produce accurate and timely court documents. This role includes line management responsibility and is supported by a structured yet flexible training programme that develops the skills required to perform this vital role. The Crown Court Clerk works within HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS), the body responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure Crown Court hearings run smoothly and meet judicial sitting time requirements.
  • Speak publicly in court, liaise confidently with judges, defence, prosecution, media and members of the public.
  • Produce accurate, time‑critical documentation, including verdicts, arraignments, court orders and hearing outcomes.
  • Intervene in court when required to maintain order and effectiveness.
  • Lead and manage a clerking team, setting direction, holding meetings and measuring performance.
  • Maintain overall team wellbeing, motivating staff and delivering excellent customer service.
  • Adapt to new digital systems and technologies, continually learning and improving processes.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Ability to motivate and support a team to deliver excellent customer service and achieve effective performance.
  • Confidence to speak publicly and within a courtroom environment.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and prioritisation skills.
  • Ability to complete documents accurately and meet deadlines.
  • IT proficiency with the ability to learn and adapt to different technologies and software packages.
  • High emotional resilience and a non‑judgemental approach to complex and sensitive matters.
  • Active listening and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience working within process‑driven environments and managing multiple tasks simultaneously.

Location & Travel

Based at Newcastle Crown Court, The Quayside, Newcastle, NE1 3LA. Occasional travel across the cluster area may be required for cover when needed.

Work Hours & Flexible Work

Positions are customer‑facing and office‑based. Full‑time hours are required, with a minimum of 30 hours per week, including full days. Part‑time arrangements may be considered, but the position must be able to cover required hours.

Visa & Eligibility

This role is not eligible for new Skilled Worker visas under current immigration rules. From 22 July 2025 the government introduced changes to the Skilled Worker visa route – the Department cannot sponsor applicants who have not held a Skilled Worker visa prior to that date. Applicants who have held a Skilled Worker visa continuously before 22 July 2025 should raise this during the vetting checks. Successful applicants must ensure they have the legal right to live and work in the Civil Service and in the United Kingdom.
