HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is an agency of the Ministry of Justice responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family Courts and Tribunals in England and Wales. Our roles support our court users and colleagues within HMCTS, where people and businesses access potentially life-changing justice. National Services manages centralised administrative and contact functions in HMCTS. Mental Health Tribunals (MHTs) are specialist Courts whose judges and members hear a wide range of cases, such as tax, employment, and immigration and asylum. Tribunals may impose fines and penalties or award compensation and costs. They may make decisions affecting benefits, leave or refusal to stay in the UK or the extent of provision of special educational help for children.
Your role: You will be providing administrative support to arrange MHTs for those who are subject to a section under the Mental Health Act. The role will include some telephony work and virtual support for tribunals hearings. This will involve liaising with our vulnerable Service Users, Hospital Trusts, Legal Representatives and Judiciary. You will need strong IT skills and be able to adapt your verbal and written communication style to an empathetic and patient manner. You will be assigned to teams to carry out a variety of general administrative duties to progress cases through the tribunal system or provide support to other functions within HMCTS.
Skills and experience: With a friendly and approachable manner, you’ll have good written and verbal communication skills with a desire to deliver proactive and effective support to customers. You’ll have great attention to detail, able to enter information into our database accurately and efficiently, and able to adapt to using various software packages. You’ll enjoy organising your time, prioritising efficiently and multi-tasking in a busy environment.
Further details: These operational roles are customer facing, requiring successful applicants to be office based to provide HMCTS services to the public. Non-contractual hybrid working may be available. Hybrid working arrangements will be determined by the business and will only be available when it has been established that delivering the service from home can be done effectively. We cannot facilitate requests for a particular work from home/working in the office schedule. Standard full time working hours are 37 hours per week. Successful candidates would be required to work at Sovereign House, 17 Princess Road West, Leicester, LE1 6TE. HMCTS welcomes part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs and are agreed prior to appointment. All applications for part-time, flexible and job-sharing working patterns will be considered in accordance with the MoJ’s Flexible Working policy. A minimum of 20 working hours per week is required for this role.
Skilled Worker Visa: From 22nd July 2025, the Government increased the salary threshold for Skilled Worker visas. The starting salary for this role falls below the general salary threshold for sponsorship.
