The Ministry of Defence Police (MDP) is a civilian police force that protects the UK\’s Defence community, capabilities and assets. Our Force consists of armed officers, specialist policing roles and professional civilian staff who work seamlessly with the Ministry of Defence, US Visiting Forces, and other policing and security partners. With stations across the United Kingdom, our presence extends from nuclear facilities to military sites and government buildings. Unlike territorial police forces, our jurisdiction and expertise are focused on protecting the critical infrastructure that underpins national security. Our officers and civil servants bring diverse experience and skills to the unique challenges of Defence policing.

Control Room Operator – Responsibilities

  • Monitor and operate the Force Command, Control, Communication and Crime recording systems, MDP radio network and telephony.
  • Deployment of Police resources to incidents and coordinating support to operational officers by providing relevant system information and updating incident logs. Accurately record information onto the Force Incident recording system.
  • Receive, evaluate and act on information relating to routine and emergency situations, monitoring and responding to Police radio messages on local and national channels.
  • Respond to communications from the public, defence community and partner agencies (E-mail, telephony).
  • Disseminate information and commands on behalf of the Duty Shift Commander, Shift Supervisor and/or Force Incident Manager.
  • Create, interrogate and update police systems/records, in accordance with all relevant guidelines and procedures (Force and National) at all times.
  • Work in conjunction with partner agencies in response to events and incidents occurring.
  • Monitor both the local CCTV cameras, alarm panel, and drone detection system within the Menwith Hill area, deploying officer\’s when necessary.
  • Understand and implement the health and safety responsibilities of the post in compliance with the Chief Constables H&S Policy statement.
  • Ensure the requirements of the Data Protection act are applied to all data processed and adhere to policy for the retention of data held.
  • Maintain business administration documents and support the control room supervisor.
  • Mentor other staff in the role as required.
  • Responsible for assessing and self-managing risk within all aspects of the role.
  • Work 37 hours per week (12hr Shifts).
  • Be flexible to work Weekends and Bank Holidays.

Control Room Operator – Qualifications & Requirements

  • Successful Applicants will be expected to undertake and complete the Command, Control and Communicate (C3) and PNC Enquiry courses, in addition to site specific Control Systems.
  • The Ministry of Defence requires all candidates who are successful at interview to declare any outside interests.
  • Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record check.

The post does not offer relocation expenses.
External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
