We are looking for someone to join us as a Civil Engineering Apprentice. Whether you have recently left education or are looking to change career, this is an opportunity to study for a degree, entirely cost‑free, while gaining work‑based practical experience.

You will be supported by a team of professionals and assigned a workplace ICE registered Mentor to guide you towards becoming a professionally qualified Civil Engineer. You will be a highly motivated, resilient logical thinker and in return, our apprenticeship offers structured development, providing the foundation for your engineering career. The programme runs for up to five years and will give you valuable practical skills and academic knowledge from our educational partner, the University of Derby.

You can expect to:

  • Gain hands‑on experience by working on exciting and meaningful construction projects for our industry‑leading teams.
  • Work within a team that has designed award‑winning engineering solutions.
  • Gain work‑based experience required for professional Incorporated Engineering status with the ICE upon successful completion of your academic studies.
  • Hold a Level 6 ICE accredited BEng (Hons) Degree in Civil Engineering without paying a single penny for the Degree Apprenticeship tuition fees.

Entry requirements for the Degree Apprenticeship are as follows: Minimum academic qualifications of at least 96 UCAS points or above at A‑level or equivalent, to include Mathematics plus at least one further STEM‑based subject such as Physics, ICT, Computing or Electronics. Apprenticeship candidates will typically have at least three A‑levels at Grades A*–C including Mathematics and Physical Science, or will have completed a Level 3 Apprenticeship as a Civil Engineering Technician, plus five GCSEs at Grade A–C or 5–9 including Mathematics, English Language and Double Science or an equivalent qualification.

As an Apprentice Engineer you will help to contribute and resolve the impacts of historical mining through designing, procuring and overseeing the construction of civil engineering solutions. You'll be part of our experienced and friendly Engineering team, who pride themselves on a structured mentoring programme for professional development and valuable training. You will receive training and experience in a range of civil engineering disciplines, including structural and geotechnical engineering, and will work alongside environmental scientists and project managers to ensure that designs deliver sustainability and environmental improvements.

The post will involve hybrid working. It is anticipated that typically three days on average will be within the Mansfield office, with day releases to the University of Derby (28 days a year). Visits to our construction sites across the country will be required, for which transport and accommodation will be provided. An apprenticeship offer will be subject to acceptance onto the Degree Apprenticeship at the University of Derby. Applications to this apprenticeship will need to be made through the Mining Remediation Authority, which will coordinate the process between the prospective Apprentice, the University of Derby and the Authority.

You will be employed on a fixed‑term contract which will be subject to the ongoing successful completion of the apprenticeship programme and to working in accordance with the values and behaviours of the Authority. Your pay will be linked to your qualification and performance milestones through the life of the apprenticeship. A starting salary of £24,454 per annum will progress to £34,000+ upon IEng award.

We don’t expect candidates to meet every single desired qualification. If your experience looks a little different from what we have identified and you think you can bring value to the role, we’d love to learn more about you.

Role location: Hybrid working (typically 3 days working out of our Mansfield office).
