Role information

This is a full-time role offered with a salary of £50,000-60,000 per annum.

The role is offered on a remote-first basis, though the successful applicant must be UK based and must have Right to Work in the UK.

Note that preference may be given to applicants who are able to commute into the London office one day per quarter.

Mindstep operates on a 9-day fortnight model of work, meaning that you get one additional day of leave every other week.

• What the job involves
• Contribute to quality assurance across the Mindstep platform, while also supporting product engineering work through building, maintaining and improving frontend and backend features;
• Bring a strong testing mindset into feature development by helping the team think through edge cases, failure states, data scenarios, permissions, regressions and user impact early in the process;
• Work closely with the engineering team to improve automated testing, testability and release confidence, while contributing directly to the codebase as a software engineer;
• Help design and shape features in a way that makes them easier to test, easier to debug and safer to release;
• Work with the Compliance Team to build tools and automated processes that support regulatory compliance across the development lifecycle.

In addition, collaborate with the Compliance Team to develop a software testing strategy that aligns with Sa MD regulations;

• Build and maintain meaningful automated test coverage where it adds value, embedding testing into development rather than treating it as a separate activity;
• Support engineers in writing better tests for their own work, improving shared patterns, tooling and confidence across the team;
• Investigate bugs and regressions with the team, helping identify whether issues come from implementation, unclear requirements, missing coverage, data problems or process gaps;
• Take part in normal engineering ceremonies and delivery work, contributing to planning, technical decisions, implementation, review and release from a quality-focused perspective;
• Help improve CI/CD checks, test data, fixtures, mocks, environments and other tooling that supports reliable software delivery;
• Balance product delivery with quality improvements, knowing when to automate, when to manually explore and when a pragmatic risk-based approach is more appropriate.

Who you are

• Core requirements
• Strong proficiency in Type Script, React, and modern frontend architecture, including component design, routing, state management, accessibility, and responsive UI delivery;
• Strong proficiency in Type Script/Node. js backend development, with experience designing and maintaining RESTful APIs, service boundaries, validation, error handling, and shared domain models;
• Strong hands-on experience with AWS serverless architecture, especially Lambda, API Gateway, Dynamo DB, S3, SSM, IAM, Cloud Watch, and serverless Ia C deployment using tools such as Serverless Framework and Cloud Formation;
• Excellent understanding of frontend and backend testing practices, including unit, integration, and component testing with tools such as Jest, React Testing Library, Storybook, Playwright/Cypress, or similar;
• Experience working with CI/CD pipelines, environment-based deployments, and secure configuration/secrets management.

Desirable requirements

• Experience building AI-driven product experiences, including LLM API integration, prompt/config management, structured responses, safety handling, fallback flows, and observability;
• Familiarity with Auth0/OIDC, analytics/monitoring tools, and privacy-conscious healthcare or wellbeing applications;
• Experience working in regulated environments, specifically around “software as a medical device” and an understanding of the regulatory considerations that come with it.
• Application process
• Introductory interview with the engineering hiring manager (30 minutes).
• Complete a take-home technical task (maximum 2 hours) and present your work at a technical interview with the engineering hiring manager and CTO (60 minutes).
• Culture-fit interview with the COO (30 minutes).
