Are you an experienced Transport Planner with a strong background in HGV fleet planning, route optimisation and transport compliance? We are recruiting on behalf of a well-established business looking for a proactive and organised planner to coordinate the day-to-day transport operation and maximise fleet efficiency. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in transport planning, fleet scheduling, driver management and HGV logistics who is looking to join a busy and growing operation.

Role

As Transport Planner, you will be responsible for planning and coordinating the daily movement of HGV vehicles, ensuring customer requirements are met while maintaining compliance with UK transport legislation and company procedures. Working closely with drivers, customers and the workshop team, you'll ensure vehicles are utilised efficiently, routes are optimised and all transport activities run smoothly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and schedule daily HGV vehicle movements to maximise fleet utilisation.
  • Allocate work to drivers while ensuring compliance with drivers hours and Working Time Directive regulations.
  • Optimise delivery routes to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs.
  • Monitor vehicle availability and coordinate with the workshop regarding servicing, MOTs and planned maintenance.
  • Liaise with drivers throughout the day, responding to delays, breakdowns and operational changes.
  • Ensure all transport activities comply with DVSA regulations, tachograph legislation and Operator Licence requirements.
  • Maintain accurate transport records and update transport management systems.
  • Communicate with customers regarding delivery schedules and resolve transport queries.
  • Monitor transport KPIs including vehicle utilisation, on-time delivery, fuel performance and driver productivity.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and customer service.

Essential Requirements

  • Previous experience planning HGV transport operations.
  • Good understanding of drivers hours legislation, tachograph regulations and UK transport compliance.
  • Experience using transport management systems (TMS) and route planning software.
  • Strong geographical knowledge and route planning ability.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced transport environment and respond to changing priorities.
  • Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office.

You’ll have experience in one or more of the following roles: Transport Planner, Senior Transport Planner, Logistics Planner, Traffic Planner, Transport Coordinator, Fleet Planner, Routing Planner, Distribution Planner, Transport Operations Coordinator.

Experience within any of the following sectors would be advantageous: Logistics, Distribution, General Haulage, Waste Management, Construction, Manufacturing, Utilities, Civil Engineering, Heavy Industry, FMCG, Retail Distribution.
