The City Recruiter is supporting a leading engineering organisation within the nuclear sector, seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Engineer to join their project delivery team in Warrington. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering complex mechanical design solutions across large-scale nuclear decommissioning projects.
This position offers the opportunity to contribute to technically challenging programmes that play a vital role in the UK's nuclear clean-up and safety operations, working collaboratively with other engineering disciplines and project teams.
Key Responsibilities- Lead and support the design and development of complex mechanical handling systems, components, and assemblies for use in nuclear environments.
- Produce and review detailed design documentation including design reports, calculations, 3D models, and manufacturing drawings.
- Apply sound engineering judgement to ensure compliance with safety, regulatory, and quality requirements.
- Work closely with EC&I, civil, and process engineering disciplines to deliver fully integrated engineering solutions.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and HAZOP/HAZAN studies.
- Contribute to project planning, cost estimation, and schedule management.
- Ensure designs meet client specifications and standards while maintaining a focus on operability, maintainability, and safety.
- Provide technical support and mentoring to junior engineers.
- Proven experience in mechanical design and engineering delivery within highly regulated industries (nuclear preferred, but oil & gas, defence, or power generation considered).
- Demonstrable experience in the design and development of mechanical handling systems and related equipment.
- Proficient in the use of common design tools such as SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD, or similar 3D CAD platforms.
- Strong understanding of engineering principles, materials selection, manufacturing methods, and design substantiation.
- Experience producing and managing detailed design documentation and supporting project assurance processes.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to interface effectively across disciplines and stakeholders.
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or working towards professional registration highly advantageous.
- Additional industry accreditations or nuclear safety training (e.g., SQEP, IOSH, SC clearance) are highly desirable.
