Design Engineering Manager – Onsite
Position Overview:
As Design Engineering Manager for GM Performance Power Units, you will be accountable for the technical leadership and delivery of advanced power unit assemblies and systems. You will lead a high-performing team of design engineers, ensuring that all components meet the exact standards of performance, reliability, and regulatory compliance required in elite motorsport. Your role will be pivotal in driving innovation and maintaining our competitive edge on and off the track.
Key Responsibilities
• Provide technical leadership and direction for the design, development, and integration of power unit components and systems, from concept through to production and race deployment.
• Lead, mentor, and develop a multidisciplinary team of design engineers, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement.
• Oversee all phases of the design process using advanced CAD and PLM systems, ensuring designs meet performance targets, technical regulations, and manufacturing requirements.
• Collaborate closely with simulation, analysis, manufacturing, test, and trackside operations teams to ensure optimal performance and seamless integration of all power unit systems.
• Drive the use of best practices in design validation, including FEA, CFD, simulation, prototyping, and physical testing.
• Take ownership of technical sign-off for major designs and support rapid resolution of engineering challenges throughout the product lifecycle.
• Manage project timelines, resource allocation, and design office workflow to deliver projects on time and within budget.
• Lead technical reviews, design gateways, and regular progress updates to senior technical management.
• Champion the adoption of new technologies, materials, and methodologies to enhance power unit performance and reliability.
• Ensure rigorous adherence to safety, quality, and regulatory standards across all design activities.
• Support recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing professional development of engineering staff, including performance reviews and tailored development plans.
Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline required; Master’s degree preferred.
• Significant experience in design engineering within F1, top-tier motorsport, or high-performance automotive environments.
• Demonstrated leadership experience managing engineering teams and delivering complex projects to aggressive deadlines.
• Expert proficiency in advanced Siemens NX CAD software and familiarity with FEA, CFD, and PLM/data management tools.
• Deep understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacturability.
• Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills, with a proactive and solutions-oriented approach.
• Passion for innovation, performance, and continuous improvement in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
• International travel may be required to support project needs and to collaborate with global teams.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Racing Engine Design, Development and/or Analysis experience.
• Formula 1 Power Unit experience.
