Technical Consultant (Data) at Mime – London – Onsite – £45k-£55k

Whether it\’s through groundbreaking longitudinal research with large education datasets, or producing organisational data strategies, it\’s our team’s ability to process and analyse data, and clearly convey insights, that enables our clients to take meaningful action.
We\’re looking for someone who can evidence deep technical expertise alongside an enjoyment of working with a team, building client relationships and running projects, and shares our desire to solve social challenges through data and technology.
Responsibilities
Reporting to and working closely with our Technical Director, you will be responsible for managing small teams to deliver dashboard development, systems design and process automation projects. Responsibilities include:
Technical project work
Working with our Technical Director, technical associates and junior team members to deliver technical work such as:
- Developing and implementing new database schemas for use on client projects and internally
- Using SQL and other tools to improve data processes used in:
- preparing and uploading data for databases which power our websites and applications
- importing, extracting and manipulating data into and out of the Mime DataHub(1) to drive our dashboard reports
- querying data for use in our analysis products and our predictive models
- Making structural changes to databases which underpin our analysis websites, for example when new features are being built, tested, and implemented
- Automating data extraction and load processes, including using APIs to facilitate data transfer
- Assisting in designing and developing web-based applications(2) as well as implementing new features on our existing systems
- Automating processes to help speed up routine tasks that our analyst team or clients carry out (for example using VBA or Power Automate/Power Query)
- Developing new data platforms in response to emerging client needs
Project and client management
Day to day management activities on client projects, including:
- Gathering and documenting client requirements to share with clients and the project team
- Setting up a project plan and managing teams to ensuring the delivery of the project runs to plan
- Providing clear written and verbal updates to ensure the client is kept abreast of developments and is happy with how the project is progressing
- Ensuring that client deliverables meet our high standards and that client requirements are met
- Providing training and guidance to the client, including writing handover documentation
Supporting the Mime team
- Providing oversight of the work of junior analysts, for example via code reviews and other quality control
- Working with technical associates and software agencies, including ensuring successful delivery of outsourced technical work
- Mentoring and managing junior analysts, including identifying skill development pathways
- Writing and delivering technical training courses across the team
- Helping ensure good technical standards across the team, including version control, code commenting, etc
Supporting the growth of Mime\’s Data Capability business area, for example:
- Drafting and pitching technical aspects of project proposals
- Identifying opportunities for upselling to existing clients
- Writing blog posts to help raise awareness of our technical capability
- Producing promotional material such as slide decks and case studies to share with prospective clients

What we’re looking for
We value talent and drive. We’re looking for a smart, motivated applicant with the following skills, experience and qualities:
- Evidence of ability to solve complex data, technical and logic problems, including through a very strong academic track record
- Track record of designing and building databases, including data structures appropriate for different use cases, for example powering front end applications and analysis dashboards
- Strong data handling skills , including manipulating and processing data systemically and running data import processes and pipelines
- High degree of proficiency with SQL (can be PostgreSQL, MySQL or SQL Server)
- Experience of running projects , or parts of large projects, ensuring they run to time and budget
- A track record of gathering technical requirements from clients and designing data solutions accordingly
- A track record of producing informative analysis from complex datasets, including through data visualisations
- Ability to communicate technical concepts in clear, plain English terms to non-technical audiences in both written and verbal form
- A track record of supporting junior staff to deliver projects and/or to improve their technical skillsets
- Extensive experience of one or more of the following:
- Tableau, PowerBI or other dashboard and visualisation tools
- Process automation , for example through Power Automate, Visual Basic, or other code-based solutions
- System deployment tools , such as Docker, GitHub, etc
- Microsoft Excel
- Experience of line management
- Experience of training colleagues in technical skills
- Experience of working with external partners to deliver technical work
- Track record of drafting high quality written outputs
- Experience of working with public and third sector organisations

Package:
- Salary ÂŁ45k to ÂŁ55k p.a. depending on experience
