Legal Counsel – Milwaukee County Child Support
Pay Rate Hourly: $47.64 – $71.46

Child Support Services (CSS) within DHHS manages over 119,000 cases in Milwaukee County, ensuring children are supported by both parents whenever possible.
Job Summary:
This Legal Counsel position provides legal services related to Title IV-D of the Social Security Act, representing the State of Wisconsin in family law cases to meet performance goals in establishing paternity, support orders, and proper collection and disbursement of child support.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Represent the State in Circuit and Family Courts, resolving child support cases effectively.
- Review case facts, apply relevant laws, and prepare organized court presentations.
- Handle referrals from staff, courts, and participants, and suggest operational improvements.
- Conduct legal research, evaluate appeals, and prepare appellate briefs when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Resident of Wisconsin.
- Jurist Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school or will receive JD within 60 days, and licensed or eligible to be licensed in Wisconsin.
- Intermediate proficiency in computer applications such as word processing and spreadsheets.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Strong communication skills, ability to handle sensitive information professionally, and ability to work with distressed participants.
