The Fracture Clinic is a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment that sees a wide range of orthopaedic conditions, from acute injuries to post-operative follow-ups. In this role you will lead the team in delivering safe and effective clinical practice. You will have significant post registration experience ideally in orthopaedics or an outpatient setting. This is an exciting secondment for an experienced nurse looking to take the next step in their career and play a key role in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care in an outpatient orthopaedic setting.

Main duties of the job

• The aim of this role is to provide efficient day to day running of the fracture clinic including the co-ordination of staff to ensure the highest standard of assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of individualised holistic patient care.

• This will involve managing a varied patient caseload where the post holder will be required to plan, modify and carry out complex assessment, diagnosis and intervention demonstrating clinical judgement in order to lead the service.

• Encouraging an environment of empowerment through coaching, teaching and facilitating.

• Contribute to the management of the outpatient department in the absence of the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse.

• To undertake clinic activities that support activity within Trauma and Orthopaedics’ as required.

• To undertake any other duties as required by the Trust appropriate and relevant to the post.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical

• To be responsible for a clinical caseload, formulating individualised management and treatment plans, using specialist clinical reasoning, clinical diagnostics, critical thinking, reflection, and analysis to support treatment, and utilising a wide range of advanced treatment skills and options as appropriate.
• Assess, develop, implement, and modify specialist programmes of care and treatment plans to meet the needs of patients using national guidance.

Management

• To be responsible for the day to day running of the Fracture Clinic.
• To take part in the educational and training activities within the Fracture Clinic and orthopaedic service.

Communication

• Represent the Fracture Clinic team and/or individual patients at multi-disciplinary team meetings to ensure the delivery of a co-ordinated and client centred multi-professional service.
• To be able to effectively communicate with patients, face to face and over the
telephone, complex and sensitive information in an understandable way, including explaining the results of investigations, their clinical diagnosis and treatment plan, which may include the need for surgery.

Audit and Research

• To actively participate and lead on in research projects (both local and national) within the outpatient setting.
• Promote and demonstrate research-based practice, encouraging and supporting staff actively involved in research.

Service Delivery and Improvement

• To work within the guidelines of the Health and Safety at Work Act and Manual Handling and Loading Procedures.
• To adhere to child and adult safeguarding protocols within clinical practice.

Administrative

• To provide specialist written reports to multi -professional colleagues including
GPs and consultants regarding the VFC management and
treatment of clients.
• To develop and provide specialist written information for patients on all treatment procedures, home exercise programme and orthotics.

Education

• Ensure the integration of education, research, and practice development within the fracture Clinic Team.
• Share professional knowledge and expertise through formal and informal teaching using flexible methods of delivery.
