Diabetes Specialist Nurse – Maternity Cover
Department: Diabetes
Band 7 £47,810 – £54,710 Per annum pro rata
Hours 37.5 per week, all MKUH roles will be considered for flexible working
We are seeking a dedicated and highly skilled Diabetes Specialist Nurse to join our outpatient team, with a particular focus on antenatal care for patients with pre-existing Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. This exciting opportunity offers a unique chance to make a difference in the lives of patients who are planning pregnancy or managing diabetes during pregnancy.
As part of our multidisciplinary team, the successful candidate will provide expert pre-conception triage and advice, working closely with patients and healthcare professionals to optimise care for women with diabetes before and during pregnancy. The role also includes management of insulin pumps and some cross-cover responsibilities for the insulin pump service.

To provide expert care and advice to all patients with different types of Diabetes who attend the hospital either as an inpatient or outpatient.
To reduce the impact of symptoms and improve the quality of care for patients with diabetes, including optimising treatment and providing education and support for patients and their families and carers.
To take the lead role in the development and delivery of expert education and training in the area of diabetes for other health professionals and stakeholders. To act independently and when necessary in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to ensure patients receive optimal care.
Main duties and responsibilities
- To demonstrate a professional approach to the leadership and management of the in-patient service.
- Assumes accountability and responsibility for practice and along with the members of the healthcare team, strives to attain the highest standard of practices.
- Demonstrates and establishes a relationship of trust with patients, carers, and families.
- Demonstrates expertise when dealing with complex patients with co morbid conditions and their families who require new skills to live with a chronic condition.
- Receives direct referrals from medical staff, nursing staff and patient self-referral. Is able to review appropriateness of these referrals.
- To act as an expert practitioner in the management of the patient’s chronic condition, demonstrating advanced clinical skills and knowledge to professional staff and patients with a diabetes condition.
- Identifies the ongoing training and educational needs of the person with diabetes, as well as their carers and their families in relation to the treatment and management of different types of Diabetes and the prevention of related complications.
- Provides specialist, expert education to the patient and their families as well as to other health professionals and stakeholders.
