Public Health Principal – Public Mental Health and Healthy Ageing

Milton Keynes City Council is hiring a Public Health Principal to lead on Public Mental Health and Healthy Ageing within a shared Public Health team. The role reports to the Head of Public Health Programmes and is based in Milton Keynes, with work across Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire and Milton Keynes (BMK).

The Public Mental Health and Healthy Ageing Team works with partners to improve mental health and wellbeing and to support healthy ageing across the three authorities. Current priorities include suicide prevention, monitoring and evaluation of the BMK Suicide Prevention Action Plan, reducing stigma, addressing digital isolation, and ensuring accessible services that support health behaviours for older adults. You will lead a small team and champion prevention to improve mental wellbeing, promote healthy ageing and reduce mental health inequalities. Experience in complex health and care systems and strategic partnership work is essential. Experience in the public mental health or healthy ageing field is beneficial. This role may be suitable for home working following an assessment. Interviews will be held on 16 October.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the strategic development and implementation of public health programmes for public mental health and healthy ageing to improve outcomes for residents across BMK.
  • Influence partners across the Integrated Care System (ICS) to deliver priorities identified in national and local strategies; use data and evidence to target interventions at those at higher risk of poor mental health or challenges to ageing well.
  • Manage key public mental health areas including suicide prevention, prevention and early intervention, reducing stigma, addressing social isolation, and supporting carers and dementia.
  • Promote healthy ageing through activities such as physical activity, falls prevention, reducing digital isolation, and ensuring accessible health-behaviour services for older adults.
  • Manage the public mental health budget, ensure evidence-based interventions deliver value for money, and align resources to prevention, early intervention, and recovery within a financially challenged system.
  • Line-manage the Public Health Practitioner – Public Mental Health; monitor work plans and support professional development to deliver public health and healthy ageing initiatives and support wider public health programmes as necessary.
