We're recruiting a Caretaking Technician to help keep a varied portfolio of council buildings safe, welcoming and ready for use. You'll complete routine maintenance, repairs, safety checks and practical caretaking tasks across different sites. You'll also prepare rooms for meetings, events and conferences, support deliveries and contractors, and respond to building-related issues. This is a rewarding, practical role where your work will help colleagues, residents and visitors use our buildings safely and confidently. The role involves driving council vehicles, using tools and equipment, moving furniture and working both indoors and outdoors. You'll need a full, clean manual driving licence and the ability to travel between sites.

This is a Site-Based role, and you'll be expected to work from the designated workplace.

Main Responsibility:

  • Carry out planned and responsive caretaking, routine maintenance and minor repairs across a range of council properties.
  • Set up rooms, furniture and equipment for meetings, events and conferences, following the agreed layout and timescale.
  • Complete regular building and fire-safety checks, keep accurate records and report hazards or problems promptly.
  • Use council vehicles, tools, handheld devices and property systems safely and in line with council requirements.
  • Welcome contractors, record their attendance, manage permits to work and monitor activity while they're on site.
  • Support deliveries, office moves, emergency clean-ups and minor outdoor work, including clearing snow, ice and weeds when required.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • A good standard of education to National Vocational Qualification Level 2, or at least three GCSEs at grades A* to C, including English and maths.
  • You'll hold a full, clean manual driving licence and be able to work across a variety of sites.
  • Practical and safety-focused, you'll understand health and safety requirements, including the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health, and know how to identify and reduce risks.
  • Confident using everyday digital tools, you'll be able to record work accurately and learn the systems needed for the role.
  • Comfortable working independently, you'll organise your workload, respond calmly to unexpected problems and adjust priorities when needed.
  • With a clear and respectful communication style, you'll work well with residents, visitors, contractors and colleagues while demonstrating our values of being Dedicated, Respectful and Collaborative.

To be successful in this role, you'll need a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle. If we offer you the role, we'll ask you to provide evidence of your driving licence and vehicle insurance, including cover for business use. We're unable to confirm an appointment until these documents are received. As part of the pre-employment checks, should you be offered the role, we'll carry out a Basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

In addition to your salary, we offer a range of benefits including:

  • Great holiday benefits - most roles include 28 days annual leave every year on top of public (bank) holidays, increasing to 32 days after five years. In addition, there is a holiday purchase scheme allowing staff to purchase up to 5 additional days of leave each year.
  • Excellent pension - everyone who works for us can join the national Local Government Pension Scheme, widely regarded as one of the best available.
  • A full range of family friendly policies including enhanced maternity, adoption and paternity support.
  • Access to an award-winning employee benefits programme that includes a health cash plan, a low-cost bike purchase scheme as well as high street discounts and money off entertainment and travel.
  • Salary sacrifice car scheme - eligible employees can lease an electric or low-emission vehicle at a reduced cost through salary sacrifice, subject to National Minimum Wage and other eligibility requirements.
  • Blue Light Card - employees working within social care can qualify for an additional range of discounts from national retailers and local businesses.
