Your mission

Your mission is to shape and extend our existing platform into a cohesive set of high-quality, scalable products, while championing engineering excellence across the business. This means improving what exists, identifying gaps, and driving forward solutions that balance speed, reliability, and long-term sustainability. We’re a team that is embracing AI across the entire software development lifecycle, and so we’re looking for someone who is comfortable working this way and wants to push it further. You will work within a cross-functional product team — alongside senior engineers, product managers, designers, engineers, QA, and domain experts — to iteratively refine and deliver solutions that align with both customer needs and our internal architecture.

Your responsibilities in this role will include:

  • Development of back-end web application services
  • Contribute to architecture decisions
  • Discovery and integration of new technologies
  • Support & maintenance of our codebase
  • Use AI tools across your development workflow, and share useful techniques with colleagues
  • Help to embed a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement

Required skills:

  • A high degree of personal honesty and integrity
  • 5+ years of professional work experience as a back-end engineer
  • Strong understanding of Node.js and TypeScript
  • Strong understanding of modern web application development (APIs, Services, Architecture, Security)
  • Experience with distributed messaging systems (SQS, RabbitMQ, Kafka, etc.)
  • Experience with event-driven, micro-service architecture
  • A self-starter able to independently gain knowledge and use new frameworks
  • Comfortable using AI tools in your development workflow
  • Good spoken and written English
  • A brilliant mind. A people-person (we need your mind and skills, but also your smile and personality)

Additional skills you may have:

  • Experience developing cloud native solutions in AWS (strongly valued, but not essential)
  • Experience with IaaC
  • Background in FX or financial markets
  • Experience with Coding Agents and Context Engineering Practices
  • Experience working in a small team or startup environment

What we offer in return:

Our commitment is to help you flourish in this role, through support with your professional development, opportunities to be involved in key projects, and exposure to challenges that you may not be offered in a larger organisation. We will provide:

  • A competitive salary with annual reviews;
  • 25 days’ paid annual leave plus an additional day per year of service;
  • Excellent staff development and training opportunities;
  • Flexible working arrangements including remote working;

How to prepare for a job interview at MillTech

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If MillTech uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
