We are recruiting a data protection and information law solicitor or experienced data protection practitioner to join our contentious data protection and information governance team.
The role
Work closely with a collaborative data, privacy and information law group, focusing on applied data protection work and advising clients in challenging or sensitive situations.
Qualifications
Suitable candidates include qualified solicitors with 1–8 years post‑qualification experience and non‑qualified professionals such as in‑house data protection practitioners, legal executives, specialist advisors, or senior paralegals with hands‑on experience in DSARs, FOIA requests, or broader GDPR compliance. Candidates should have solid experience advising on the GDPR and the Data Protection Act, be able to manage DSARs and respond to data breaches, and demonstrate strong communication, organisational skills, and the ability to prioritise effectively. Experience with FOIA, data breach response in cyber incidents, contentious data matters, ICO investigations, regulatory enquiries, or First‑tier Tribunal proceedings will be an advantage.
Responsibilities
- Manage day‑to‑day DSAR queries, including strategy, proportionality, exemptions, and risk, with paralegal support on document review.
- Assist with ICO investigations (information gathering, drafting responses, managing correspondence).
- Support matters before the First‑tier Tribunal.
- Advise on third‑party data requests (e.g., police, regulators).
- Guide clients on handling personal data in internal processes (e.g., grievances, disciplinaries).
- Support pre‑action correspondence and litigation arising from data breaches.
- Advise on responses to data subject rights requests.
