The role involves joining a leading national cross-sector public procurement team, working alongside other public procurement lawyers and commercial team members. The position provides support and advice on public procurement law to clients including central and local government, national agencies, NHS bodies, education institutions, charities, utility companies, and suppliers from SMEs to PLCs.
Ideally based in Birmingham or Cambridge, applications are also welcome from candidates in Leeds, Manchester, Norwich, or Oxford. Responsibilities include:
- Drafting and advising on procurement documentation (from contract notices through to evaluation strategy, standstill, and award)
- Procurement strategy and advisory work
- Advising on challenges to procurement decisions and processes

The aim is to provide clients with pragmatic and commercially focused advice, requiring a lawyer who can apply their specialist knowledge of procurement law to find practical solutions.
The ideal candidate will be an enthusiastic team player with a passion for public procurement law, possessing the confidence to take responsibility for their own matters and clients, and contribute to the growth of the practice. Candidates should have 5+ years PQE with previous public procurement experience, demonstrating excellent commercial legal skills, sound commercial acumen, and an understanding of the public sector.
Key activities include:
- Advising on all aspects of public procurement law
- Working with procurement litigation specialists on High Court proceedings (both defending and bringing challenges)
- Assisting in maintaining the market-leading procurement online resource, the Procurement Portal
- Supporting business development activities, including speaking at training events, seminars, and external conferences, and contributing to newsletters, blogs, tenders, and pitches
- Contributing to internal know-how and precedent development
- Supervising junior team members, trainees, and apprentice solicitors
While the main focus is public procurement, applications are welcome from candidates who can also support clients in drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, particularly regarding public sector outsourcing and projects.
