Job description

Job title

  • Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
  • Department: Operations

Type

  • Permanent
  • Reporting to: Engineering Manager
  • Purpose of the Role

As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer (FEA Champion), you will be a recognized subject matter expert in structural and strength analysis, leading the application of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to optimise product performance, reliability, and manufacturability.

You will take technical ownership of complex product development programmes from concept through to production, providing advanced engineering analysis, delegating simulation and design activities where appropriate, mentoring team members, and driving best practices in simulation-led design.

Your expertise will directly influence product innovation, cost optimisation, and time-tomarket outcomes, helping Colebrook Bosson Saunders (Miller Knoll) achieve its strategic growth and sustainability objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all FEA and simulation activities across multiple product lines, ensuring structural integrity, reliability, and manufacturability of designs.
  • Act as the technical authority for structural performance and analysis methodologies, defining and maintaining standards, processes, and validation criteria.
  • Drive continuous improvement in analysis capability, including automation, material modelling, and correlation between simulation and physical testing.
  • Provide advanced technical guidance to mechanical design engineers, mentoring and reviewing their work to enhance team capability.
  • Delegate and oversee analysis and design tasks to lower-level professionals, ensuring quality, consistency, and adherence to established engineering standards.
  • Provide technical leadership (non-line management) within the engineering function, ensuring consistent application of simulation-led design principles.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with industrial design, manufacturing, and testing teams to ensure data-driven design decisions and product integrity.
  • Lead major design reviews, presenting analytical findings to senior stakeholders and influencing decisions at the project and portfolio level.
  • Influence product strategy and engineering decision-making through expert analysis, data-driven recommendations, and leadership in simulation-led development methodologies.
  • Manage multiple complex engineering projects, balancing technical depth with delivery and commercial priorities.
  • Support strategic initiatives such as sustainability improvements, weight reduction, and cost optimisation through innovative engineering solutions.
  • Ensure engineering documentation (CAD data, drawings, analysis reports) meets internal standards and external regulatory requirements.
  • Champion knowledge sharing within the global engineering community to strengthen simulation capability and technical excellence across regions.
  • Key Competencies & Experience
  • Typically, 8+ years of mechanical design experience, with a strong focus on FEA and simulation-led product development.
  • Proven track record as a technical expert in structural analysis using ANSYS or equivalent tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large, complex engineering projects independently.
  • In-depth understanding of Design for Manufacture and Assembly (Df MA), particularly plastic injection moulding and metal casting.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills — able to interpret results, challenge assumptions, and guide key design decisions.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and leading technical workstreams or process improvements.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline (Master’s preferred).
  • __________________________________________________________________________
  • Behavioural Attributes
  • Strategic thinker with a proactive, collaborative approach to problem-solving.
  • Recognized role model for engineering excellence and continuous improvement.
  • High attention to detail with strong ownership and accountability for outcomes.
  • Innovative and adaptable, continuously seeking improved methods and tools to enhance product performance and efficiency.
