I am working with a well-established and reputable firm who are looking to recruit a Costs Draftsman to join their growing costs team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced professional, or an ambitious junior looking to develop their career, within a supportive and forward-thinking environment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for managing a varied caseload of costs matters and will work closely with solicitors, fee earners, and external parties to ensure costs are prepared, negotiated, and resolved efficiently.

Key Responsibilities
  • Drafting Bills of Costs (paper and electronic), including Precedent H and detailed assessments
  • Preparing Points of Dispute and Replies
  • Conducting negotiations on costs matters with opposing parties
  • Advising fee earners and clients on costs recovery, budgeting, and risk
  • Attending costs hearings and detailed assessments where required
  • Assisting with costs budgeting, monitoring, and forecasting
  • Managing files in accordance with deadlines, compliance, and best practice
  • Maintaining accurate records and providing regular updates to stakeholders
Candidate Requirements
  • Proven experience as a Costs Draftsman (or Costs Lawyer)
  • Experience drafting Bills of Costs and handling disputes from start to finish
  • Strong knowledge of the Civil Procedure Rules and costs legislation
  • Ability to manage a caseload independently with minimal supervision
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Proficiency in relevant costs drafting software (desirable)
Desirable Experience
  • Experience in specific practice areas such as Personal Injury, Clinical Negligence, Commercial Litigation, or Housing
  • Advocacy experience at costs hearings
  • Costs budgeting and strategic advisory experience
