The Opportunity
Are you an experienced bridge engineer looking for the opportunity to lead and inspire a talented team? Do you have the expertise to tackle complex bridge design, assessment, and asset management challenges? We are seeking an experienced Principal Bridge Engineer to provide technical leadership and deliver bridge and structural engineering projects across a range of infrastructure programmes. Working within a multidisciplinary environment, you will be accountable for the quality, programme delivery, and technical oversight of defined work packages, ensuring successful project outcomes for clients and stakeholders.
The Role
This role is ideal for an experienced Senior or Principal Engineer with a strong background in bridge design, assessment, inspection, and asset management who is looking to play a leading role in the delivery of complex infrastructure projects.
- Lead the delivery of small to medium-sized bridge engineering work packages including inspections, assessments, designs, and renewal schemes.
- Manage project delivery to agreed programme, budget, and quality requirements.
- Provide technical direction, checking, and approval of designs, calculations, specifications, and technical reports.
- Undertake structural analysis and design of bridge and civil structures in accordance with relevant industry standards.
- Act as a key technical interface with clients, stakeholders, and internal multidisciplinary teams.
- Mentor and develop junior engineers, supporting technical capability and knowledge sharing within the team.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards, specifications, governance processes, and quality management procedures.
- Contribute to project planning, resource management, risk identification, and commercial awareness activities.
- Support bid preparation and technical proposals where required.
- Participate in technical reviews, independent checking, and assurance activities.
- Provide construction support and respond to technical queries during project delivery phases.
You will have the following qualifications & experience
- Degree qualified in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or equivalent.
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng MICE or MIStructE).
- Strong background in bridge and structural engineering design, assessment, inspection, or asset management.
- Demonstrable experience leading the technical delivery of bridge engineering projects.
- Comprehensive knowledge of relevant UK bridge design standards, Eurocodes, DMRB, and industry guidance.
- Proficient in structural analysis methods, design software, and technical reporting.
- Experience coordinating multidisciplinary project teams and managing technical interfaces.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work effectively across engineering disciplines and project teams.
It’s great if you also have the following
- Experience working on Local Authority, National Highways, or rail infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with bridge asset management systems and inspection regimes.
- Experience acting as CRE, Design Lead, Lead Checker, or Technical Approver on projects.
- Knowledge of NEC contracts and project delivery frameworks.
- Experience supporting bridge renewal and maintenance programmes.
