A leading engineering consultancy is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their water division. You will be involved in delivering complex design solutions, providing technical leadership, and supporting the development of future engineers. This is a long-term opportunity offering a varied workload and the chance to contribute to essential infrastructure projects.
Responsibilities
- Deliver design solutions that meet stringent safety, quality, and regulatory requirements.
- Produce detailed design calculations, specifications, and drawings for clean and wastewater projects.
- Oversee, guide, and mentor CAD technicians, junior engineers, and graduates.
- Coordinate and review the work of subcontracted M&E design teams.
- Liaise with equipment suppliers and manufacturers to ensure technical compliance.
- Prepare technical reports, design studies, and supporting documentation.
- Ensure all designs align with industry standards, company procedures, and project requirements.
- Manage and record design changes throughout project lifecycles.
- Provide accurate estimates of engineering hours for design packages.
- Represent the design team at client meetings and technical presentations.
Qualifications and experience
- Around 5 years’ mechanical design experience.
- Strong background in hydraulic design and water-related projects.
- Working knowledge of electrical and control systems design.
- Degree or HND in a relevant engineering discipline.
- Membership of a professional body and working towards chartership (or already achieved).
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer status.
- Additional experience in electrical or control engineering.
- Knowledge of wastewater and clean water treatment processes.
- Awareness of construction methods and engineering drawing practices.

- Duration: 12 months + (ongoing likely).
- Hours: 40 hrs.
- Rate: £50-60 LTD (subject to an ir35 assessment confirming outside status).
- Location: Hybrid (3 days from the Stretford, Manchester office, 2 days from home).
