Can you demonstrate experience managing multidisciplinary design teams and ensuring engineering assurance from concept through to handover? Are you motivated by the opportunity to play a key role in delivering a landmark renewable energy project in the Scottish Highlands?
An exciting opportunity has arisen to join a flagship high-value hydroelectric scheme in Inverness, playing a pivotal role in delivering a nationally significant renewable energy project. This role exists due to project scale, technical complexity, and the need for integrated leadership across both design and construction engineering functions. You will act as the focal point for engineering excellence, ensuring seamless coordination between design consultants, site teams, and client stakeholders.
Your duties and responsibilities will be:
- Lead and manage the engineering function across both design and construction phases of the project.
- Act as the technical authority, ensuring design, construction, commissioning, and handover meet contractual and regulatory requirements.
- Manage and coordinate design consultants, ensuring deliverables are issued in line with programme, cost, and quality expectations.
- Oversee the design review process, challenging solutions and driving compliance with contract requirements and technical standards.
- Provide leadership and line management to design managers, engineers, and technical teams.
- Ensure effective technical query (RFI) management, change control, and design assurance processes are in place and adhered to.
- Collaborate with project teams to develop and maintain design and construction programmes.
- Promote and implement innovative engineering solutions and value engineering opportunities.
- Provide technical input into tenders, risk reviews, and pre-construction activities.
- Ensure all engineering activities comply with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards, challenging poor practice where necessary.
- Act as the key interface with client representatives, approval bodies, and stakeholders.
- Lead and chair design reviews, technical workshops, and interface meetings.
- Build capability within the team through mentoring, development, and recruitment of engineering staff.
You will have the following qualifications & experience:
- Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
- Proven experience in engineering management across both design and construction phases.
- Extensive background delivering large-scale infrastructure or energy projects (hydro, water, heavy civils or similar).
- Strong understanding of design management processes, contract compliance, and assurance.
- Demonstrable experience managing consultants, multidisciplinary teams, and stakeholder interfaces.
- Knowledge of construction methods, temporary works, and engineering best practice.
- Ability to lead technical decision-making and manage risk across complex engineering environments.
It's great if you also have the following:
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or equivalent.
- Experience working on hydroelectric or pumped storage schemes.
- Familiarity with Principal Designer duties and CDM regulations.
- Experience within Tier 1 contractor environments.
- Track record of implementing innovation and value engineering on major projects.
- Experience working with major approval bodies or regulated environments.
The setting for the role:
This role will be based on a major hydroelectric construction site in Inverness, combining office-based engineering leadership with regular site engagement. You'll work in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary environment, interfacing with designers, construction teams, client representatives, and supply chain partners. The role requires a visible leadership presence across both design offices and operational site delivery, ensuring alignment from concept through to commissioning.
