Have you developed and delivered safety assurance strategies, including leading or participating in HAZID/HAZOP studies, for safety-related systems or components? The Opportunity: The work of the Design and Safety Authority is varied covering all design aspects such as: Nuclear infrastructure safety justifications & designs that meet the appropriate standards and codes; and deliver the through life reliability and maintainability requirements. Operating Conditions & Limits and the Safety systems continued suitability for in-service use of the Clyde SSC. Design capability and Examination Inspection Maintenance and Testing (EIMT) Schedules. Changes to EIMT; defect trends etc. Nuclear site safety justification & design intent of change of use of equipment. Periodic Review of Safety programme and Performance Management reviews. The Design Authority is the Approving Authority that provides an Intelligent Customer capability for the design and safety justification of the SSC at Clyde. Summary of the Role The Safety Case Engineer will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team within the Approval Authority, the primary purpose of the role is to directly support current operations and future programmes. Supporting nuclear facilities & the delivery of services across secure nuclear defence sites. The team consists of Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Building Services, Electrical and Piping Engineers who are responsible for the authorship, development, assessment, and maintenance of Engineering Design Substantiation for Clyde Nuclear Facilities, ensuring Design Intent, Critical Safety Factors and Safety and Operational Requirements are met and are consistent with current good practice and legislative/regulatory requirements. TASKS Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of the suite of Clyde Nuclear Infrastructure Design Substantiation documents. Authoring, development, assessment, maintenance and management of design changes/concessions Presentation of Clyde Design substantiations, to Clyde ‘Due Process’ nuclear safety committees Production and development of Examination, Inspection, Maintenance & Testing (EIMT) Schedule, operating procedures and results to satisfy design requirements and safety case through life Producing/assessing Periodic Review of Safety reports Providing advice and direction to internal and external stakeholders Production of Independent Technical Assessment (ITA)/Independent Peer Review (IPR) Scopes of workUse a combination of general and specialist engineering knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology Apply appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate, maintain, decommission and re-cycle engineering processes, systems, services and products in a nuclear/high risk environment Producing robust technical justification to allow for relevant design modifications to be authorised within a high hazard industry Review technical reports and other safety case submissions from external contractors Check and review calculations and technical documents written by other members of staff Essential: Reviewing of Safety Case documentation in accordance with client arrangements and versus Relevant Good Practice expectations; Provide safety case advice to internal teams and Contractor teams; Production of safety justification documents; Attendance at review and project meetings; Chair/facilitate safety justification maturity review meetings; Attendance at Hazard Identification Workshops, optioneering reviews and other stakeholder meetings; Must have experience of developing safety assurance strategies for complex projects and safety case delivery or assessment in a nuclear environment. Desirable: Ideal candidates would already have experience within a nuclear defence environment or a similar high-risk environment Familiarity with safety case development techniques e.g., HAZID/HAZOP studies. Experience of working in the UK nuclear industry (energy or defence), particularly in the design and assessment of safety-related structures, systems and components. Knowledge of UK and US nuclear industry regulation and practice, and application of relevant nuclear-specific codes and standards. Experience of safety case delivery relating to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme and the clients safety assurance approach.Essential: For non-nuclear background candidates, a Nuclear introductory course would be required to be undertaken within 6 months of joining Minimum HNC or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline.
