The CG Supervisor reports to the VFX Supervisor and works closely with the Production Team. The role is responsible for upholding the group’s stringent technical standards across all assets and delivered shots, ensuring they align with the client’s creative vision. This role involves directing project work across departments and managing the technical artists’ needs across multiple sites.
Key duties include developing and organising workflows based on the standard pipeline, establishing defined objectives, and closely monitoring the process, progress, and results. The CG Supervisor also conducts final quality control reviews on all deliverables before they proceed to the VFX Supervisor and client. Additionally, the CG Supervisor collaborates with the Heads of VFX to draft precise briefs detailing pipeline requirements and technical development.
Key Responsibilities:
- Leadership & Technical Direction: Collaborate with VFX Supervisors and production leadership to define and implement technical and creative solutions. Drive the visual and technical integrity of CG work, ensuring it meets the company’s high-quality standards. Supervise and guide the team in creating assets, shots, and sequences that align with the project’s creative vision.
- Production Management: Develop and oversee production schedules, ensuring timely delivery of assets and sequences. Communicate effectively with production teams to manage resources, identify potential risks, and troubleshoot bottlenecks. Ensure consistent and efficient workflows by monitoring shot continuity, grain continuity, and quality control standards. Work with department leads and pipeline developers to refine workflows and ensure seamless integration across departments. Provide strategic input on pipeline development, contributing to ongoing improvements in tools, processes, and methodologies. Mentor team members, fostering their technical and artistic growth through regular feedback and guidance. Conduct performance evaluations and provide constructive recommendations for career development. Lead by example, inspiring a collaborative and solution-oriented team culture.
- Quality Control & Problem Solving: Spot-check individual artists’ work, providing detailed feedback to maintain quality and efficiency. Troubleshoot technical and creative challenges, escalating issues as necessary to keep projects on track. Serve as a key technical expert, offering insights to both individual projects and broader facility needs.
Requirements:
- Technical Skills: Demonstrable expertise in industry-standard software, including but not limited to Houdini, Maya, Nuke, and Arnold. Comprehensive knowledge and practical experience across the majority of 3D disciplines, such as modeling, rigging, texturing, look-development, layout, environments, creature-effects (FX), lighting, and general FX. Deep expertise in VFX production pipelines and workflows, encompassing asset management, efficient rendering resource utilisation, camera and set data work processes. Ability to problem-solve complex technical challenges and implement robust solutions.
- Experience & Expertise: Proven experience in a CG Supervisor or similar role within the VFX industry. Demonstrated ability to manage teams, lead projects, and deliver high-quality CG work on time and on budget. Extensive knowledge of visual effects techniques, including modelling, texturing, animation, lighting, and FX.
- Soft Skills: Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and manage diverse teams. Exceptional organisational skills and attention to detail. A proactive, solutions-oriented approach to problem-solving.
