SEMH Teaching Assistant - Stockton-on-Tees

Milk Education is working with a number of welcoming and supportive Primary Schools across Stockton-on-Tees and the surrounding areas and is looking to recruit caring, resilient, and dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistants to join schools from September 2026.

Whether you're an experienced Teaching Assistant, have experience supporting children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, or have a background in youth work, care, behaviour support, or mentoring, we'd love to hear from you.

We have a range of long-term and full-time opportunities available, with the potential to become permanent for the right candidate.

You’ll play a vital role in supporting pupils who may experience emotional, behavioural, or social challenges, helping them develop positive relationships, confidence, emotional regulation, and the skills they need to engage successfully with education.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small-group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Build positive, trusting, and consistent relationships with pupils.
  • Support pupils with emotional regulation and behaviour management.
  • Help pupils develop confidence, resilience, independence, and social skills.
  • Implement individual behaviour and support strategies.
  • Support pupils to access learning and engage positively within the classroom.
  • Work closely with teachers, SENCOs, pastoral staff, and other professionals.
  • Recognise and respond appropriately to changes in pupil behaviour and emotional wellbeing.
  • Support positive behaviour and help reduce barriers to learning.
  • Maintain high standards of safeguarding and professional practice.

Skills, Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH or behavioural needs is desirable.
  • Experience within education, youth work, care, mentoring, or behaviour support is advantageous.
  • A relevant Level 2 or Level 3 qualification is desirable but not essential.
  • Calm, patient, and resilient approach.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to build strong and positive relationships with pupils.
  • Confident supporting children with challenging or complex behaviours.
  • Understanding of safeguarding and professional boundaries.
  • Passion for helping children overcome barriers to learning.
  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to apply).

This role is paid within the advertised pay scale. Your starting rate will be determined by your qualifications, relevant experience, and the requirements of the assignment.
