Mental Health – Classroom based in Oldham

Milk Education are recruiting for a compassionate and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist school in Oldham on a long-term basis starting in September. This role will involve providing dedicated 1:1 support for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, helping them to engage with learning, regulate emotions, and build positive relationships within the school environment. The school supports pupils with a range of additional needs and is looking for someone who is patient, proactive, and confident supporting children who may display challenging behaviour. This is a fantastic opportunity for somebody passionate about making a genuine difference in the lives of young people.

The Role

• Provide consistent 1:1 support for pupils with SEMH needs both inside and outside the classroom.
• Build positive and trusting relationships to support emotional regulation and engagement in learning.
• Implement behaviour support strategies and de-escalation techniques in line with the school’s policies.
• Support pupils with social development, communication skills, and confidence building.
• Work closely with teachers, the SENCo, and pastoral teams to support pupil progress and wellbeing.

Essential Experience & Qualifications

• Previous experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, SEND, or challenging behaviour.
• Experience within a school, alternative provision, care, youth work, or support work setting is desirable.
• Strong behaviour management and relationship-building skills.
• Calm, patient and resilient approach to supporting pupils.
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
• Team Teach training is desirable but not essential.
