Overview

Working at a specialist SEND school, you will support children with a range of complex needs, including autism, speech, language and learning difficulties. This role offers hands-on experience for graduates in psychology, therapy and related fields.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support to pupils with autism, SLCN, MLD and complex additional needs.
  • Build consistent, trusting relationships that help pupils feel safe and ready to learn.
  • Support communication, independence and emotional regulation across the school day.
  • Work closely with class teachers, therapists and the wider MDT to implement individual education and support plans.
  • Adapt your approach to meet each pupil’s needs – including Makaton, PECS, sensory strategies and structured routines.
  • Contribute to a calm, positive and supportive learning environment.

Qualifications

  • Degree (or current study) in psychology, education, sociology, criminology, occupational therapy or a related field.
  • Experience in care, youth work, mentoring or volunteering with vulnerable individuals.
  • Genuine interest in autism, SEND, child development or therapeutic education.
  • Calm, patient and consistent approach with the ability to build trust with pupils who may find new relationships challenging.
