Hours: 08:30–15:30, Monday – Friday (full-time and part-time roles available)

Milk Education is working with a welcoming primary school in Whickham, seeking a dedicated Student Engagement Mentor to join their team from September. Role Overview

As a Student Engagement Mentor, you will work closely with students who require additional pastoral and behavioural support. You will build positive relationships, encourage engagement with learning, and provide one-to-one and small group mentoring to help students develop confidence, resilience, and positive attitudes towards education. Working alongside teachers and the wider school team, you will play a key role in promoting student wellbeing, improving behaviour, and supporting academic success. This role is ideal for individuals with experience working with children in education, youth work, mentoring, or support settings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-to-one and small group mentoring for students requiring additional support
  • Build trusting relationships that encourage positive behaviour and engagement
  • Support students in overcoming personal, social, emotional, or behavioural barriers to learning
  • Promote confidence, resilience, independence, and positive decision-making
  • Encourage positive attendance, punctuality, and participation in school life

Behaviour & Wellbeing

  • Support students with social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) needs where appropriate
  • Assist in implementing behaviour support strategies and individual support plans
  • De-escalate challenging situations using a calm and restorative approach
  • Promote positive behaviour throughout the school day
  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of all students

Professional Practice

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and external agencies where required
  • Monitor student progress and provide feedback to relevant staff
  • Follow all school safeguarding and behaviour policies
  • Contribute positively to the wider school community

Essential Criteria

  • Previous experience working with young children, ideally within a school, youth work, mentoring, or support setting
  • Experience supporting students with behavioural, SEMH, or additional learning needs (desirable)
  • A calm, patient, and resilient approach
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • The ability to motivate and inspire young people
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
  • Must live locally to Whickham—no relocation
