Role
As a SEND Teaching Assistant, you will work closely with teaching staff to provide tailored support to pupils with autism and complex needs. Your responsibilities may include:
- Supporting pupils with SEND in the classroom and throughout the school day
- Providing one-to-one and small-group support
- Implementing personalised strategies to support learning, engagement and emotional regulation
- Encouraging communication, independence and social development
- Supporting pupils with their individual learning and development plans
- Working collaboratively with teachers, SEND professionals and therapists
- Managing behaviour with patience, empathy and consistency
- Creating a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment
Essential Criteria
We are looking for someone who has:
- Experience working with children or young people, ideally within an SEN/SEND setting
- Experience supporting pupils with autism or complex needs
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Confidence supporting behaviour in a calm, consistent and positive manner
- A relevant degree, such as Psychology or Childhood Studies, preferred
- A Teaching Assistant or relevant support qualification, preferred
- Must live locally to Gateshead – no relocation
