Role Overview

As a Learning Support Assistant, you will work closely with teachers to support pupils both in the classroom and through small group or one-to-one interventions. You will help create a positive learning environment, encourage pupil engagement, and provide tailored support to children with a range of learning needs, including SEND. This role is ideal for an experienced Learning Support Assistant or Teaching Assistant who is passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of children.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support teachers in delivering engaging and effective lessons
  • Provide one-to-one and small group support to pupils who require additional help
  • Adapt learning activities to meet individual pupil needs, including those with SEND
  • Encourage pupil participation, confidence, and independence in learning
  • Monitor pupil progress and provide feedback to teaching staff

Classroom Support

  • Help maintain a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment
  • Support pupils’ social, emotional, and behavioural development
  • Build positive relationships with pupils, staff, and parents where appropriate
  • Assist with classroom organisation and preparation of learning resources

Professional Practice

  • Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and wider school staff
  • Follow school policies and safeguarding procedures at all times
  • Promote the welfare and wellbeing of all pupils
  • Contribute positively to the wider school community where appropriate

Essential Criteria

  • Previous experience working with children (preferably in a primary school or educational setting)
  • Experience supporting pupils with SEND or additional learning needs (desirable)
  • A patient, caring, and proactive approach
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to build positive relationships with pupils and staff
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children
  • Must live locally to Gateshead—no relocation
