Midlothian Council are seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced individual to undertake the important and fulfilling role of Fire Safety Adviser. This role holds a significant position within the local authority and will work closely with all relevant duty holders to ensure they achieve compliance regarding fire safety within their establishments.
The role, based within the Health, Safety & Resilience Team of Protective Services, is key in ensuring the overall compliance of the Council with its statutory obligations and internal policies. The role is suitable for job share and will be delivered on a hybrid working model, giving the successful applicant the opportunity to combine working from home and office. Ideally, the candidate should hold a fire risk assessment qualification such as a NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety and have broad experience of fire safety at a professional level and an overall understanding of Health and Safety legislation, including the provision of advice on the technology of fire and practical working knowledge of fire risk assessments and the relevant legal requirements, namely the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 and Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006.
Although it is not essential to be a member of the Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) at the time of application, candidates will be expected to work towards that goal, i.e. immediate Affiliate membership working towards Graduate membership within 3 years. The candidate should also ideally have a recognised qualification in health and safety, such as the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or be working towards achieving this.
Basic keyboarding skills and understanding of Microsoft database, spreadsheet and word processing applications are essential. The jobholder must also be competent in written report writing, able to communicate effectively at all levels and have experience of working independently to achieve targets. Experience of training staff, the public or non-professionals in fire safety and the use of appropriate computer packages to progress own workload is also desirable.

It is essential that the Jobholder is a corporate member of the Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) and in addition, they must hold a fire risk assessment qualification allowing access to the IFE Register of Fire Risk Assessors and Auditors. Basic keyboarding skills and understanding of Microsoft database, spreadsheet and word processing applications are also essential, as is a broad experience of Fire Safety at a professional level, including the provision of advice on the technology of fire and practical working knowledge of fire risk assessments.
The jobholder must also be competent in written report writing; able to communicate effectively at all levels; and have experience of working independently to achieve targets. Experience of training the public or non-professionals in fire risk assessment and the use of CAD and computer packages to progress own workload is desirable. A period of time would be required once in post to establish contacts and operating protocols.
Please note that it is Midlothian Council's policy that successful applicants will be appointed to the first point on the salary scale. Based on 36 hours over 52 weeks per year, the minimum actual salary for this position is £40,500.03 per annum.
