Overview

Our Midlothian Sport & Leisure Service strives to meet the needs of Midlothian residents to enable them to be physically active, providing a positive and safe environment and a varied programme of opportunities to be active. We are looking for a dynamic and motivated team player to join our Active Schools Team to cover maternity leave.

We aim to meet the needs of Sport & Leisure staff, providing a positive working environment, with staff feeling valued, supported and having opportunities to develop.

Position

Position Title: Active Schools Coordinator

Position Number: ED145

Directorate: Place

Location: Various – Penicuik Area

Contract Status: Fixed Term until February 2026 (with likelihood of continuation until July 2026)

Hours of Work: 3 days per week – 21 hours 36 mins

Working Pattern: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday

Weeks per year: 52

Salary: Based on 21.6 hours over 52 weeks per year, the minimum actual salary for this position is £23,477.24 per annum. The successful applicant will be appointed to the first point on the salary scale.

Requirements

This post is considered Regulated Work with Children under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act, 2007. Therefore, it is an offence to apply if you are barred from working with children.

Successful candidates will require PVG Scheme membership for Regulated Work with Children. You will be required to join the Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to commencing employment with Midlothian Council, the cost of which will be met by you. For further information on the PVG Scheme please visit www.disclosurescotland.gov.uk

Please note that Disclosure Scotland has changed the way PVG certificates are issued. You will be notified by email from Disclosure Scotland that your certificate is available to view. Once you have viewed your certificate you will be allowed to share this with your employer and it is only available for 14 days from the first day you have viewed the certificate. If you do not grant access to Midlothian Council to view before access is removed, a further application will need to be generated, and this will incur an additional cost.

Knowledge

Essential

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline or GTC registered.
  • Minimum of two years experience of working with children in education, sport, health, leisure and/or recreation industry.
  • Ability to identify good practice and promote the role of physical activity (including sport, play, health and active travel).
  • Experience in management of projects in areas of education, sport, health, leisure and/or recreation industry.

Desirable

  • Experience of working with and influencing external partners.
  • Experience of partnership working with the appropriate agencies involved in the delivery of play, health, travel, physical activity and sporting opportunities.
  • Knowledge of how to manage resources to an agreed set of outcomes.
  • Awareness and knowledge of issues associated with working across departments.
  • Knowledge of budgeting procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Active Schools approach, its operation and required outcomes.
  • Experience of physical activity and sport planning.
  • Knowledge and experience of primary schools and the 5-14 curriculum.
